Bernd Kraeftner studied medicine and worked as author and filmmaker. He was principal investigator of several transdisciplinary research projects, that explored the messy interfaces between the sciences and society. He founded the working group SHARED INC., Research Centre for Shared Incompetence, that applies and transforms methods of the science and technology studies, medical anthropology and ethnography, and that works with strategies of the digital and fine arts.
Sensory Regulation: Electrodermal activity of a hare. A fairy tale
Description: Bernd Kraeftner and Shared Inc. (Research Centre For Shared Incompetence) report on a little experiment which was conducted within the research project "Pillow Research - hidden talents and multiple diagnoses" (FWF L528). It shows the mundane interaction with a patient who is in a vegetative state (a comatose state). It raises (political) issues of methods of diagnosing and how these methods change our understanding of the research topic at hand.
Narrative:
The hare knew well the tale of the hare and the hedgehog. However, neither was the hare happy with his part in the story, nor was it easy for him to break with his habits. Finally, it was him, the hare, who observed the hedgehog and to set the standard for himself and his kind. Meanwhile, the hedgehog had changed his life. He now was living unpaired in a nursing home, for it had occurred that he was sitting in a wheel chair, persistently staring into space or sleeping.
The hare and the hedgehog - what kind of bet would they place this time? Now that the hedgehog lived alone – in fact 24 hours cared for but alone – the hare wanted to help and wagered that he would succeed in animating the hedgehog. Day after day the hare rushed to the hedgehog and showed him a comical movie by Almodovar. But how could he find out whether the hedgehog liked it? Nothing easier than that the hare thought: I shall measure my electrodermal activity whenever I spend time with the hedgehog in order to deduce his condition from my own mood.
But the hare had not taken into account the effects of his hasty lifestyle and a few rats who loved to refresh themselves with his signals. Given these circumstances, could he himself and his body work as a sensor at all? What would be the outcome of the bet? Would the hare succeed in the end? Or would the hedgehog manage to be more tenacious once again?
