Reactable meets Theremin / PS ArtSpace / 01.10, 12:00 - 14:30
The Reactable is one of the most innovative electronic musical instruments of the last decade. It combines the capabilities of classic modular synthesizers and digital sound processing with an intuitive tangible user interface. Electronic music becomes both clearly visible and physically graspable for performer and audience alike, creating a truly synesthetic experience. The instrument has become internationally popular since the Icelandic singer Björk began using the device on-stage during her last world tours.

Martin Kaltenbrunner, one of the Reactable inventors, will perform on the original instrument together with the experimental thereminist Günther Gessert, playing one of the oldest electronic musical instruments. Within an electro-acoustic performance, the physical interface of the Reactable will contrast with the intangible interaction on the Theremin. Before the actual evening concert, participants will have the opportunity to try both instruments in an afternoon workshop.

Workshop location:
Ps ArtSpace, Waldsteingartenstrasse 135, 1020 Wien

Günter Gessert
Günther Gessert has been performing professionally on the Theremin since the early 90ies. He played concerts in Austria, Russia, Germany and the Czech Republic, and was a member of the „International Theremin Orchestra“, which recorded the CD „Touchless“. Gessert also develops his own sensor interfaces for musical performance, and adapted his Theremin in order to meet his musical requirements.
Martin Kaltenbrunner
Martin Kaltenbrunner has been performing on the Reactable since its first public presentation in 2005. Since then his work has been shown at several major international media art and music festivals, and was also awarded the Golden Nica in 2008. His influential research on tangible interface tools has been employed for the realization of numerous artistic and scientific projects in this area. Kaltenbrunner is Professor at the Interface Culture Lab of the University of Art and Industrial Design in Linz.
